If you have to testify
- Tell the truth
- Dress neatly
- Avoid distracting mannerisms
- Never chew gum and try to keep your hands away from your face and mouth
- Be prepared
- Before you testify, review the facts in your mind, but do not try to memorize what you are going to say
- Be serious in the courtroom
- Avoid laughing and talking in the courtroom
- Address the judge as “Your Honor”
- Speak loudly and clearly
- Remain calm at all times and try not to lose your temper
- Be yourself and try not to be nervous
- Don’t be afraid to cry
- Listen carefully to all questions and take your time when answering
- Answer questions fully, but do not volunteer information
- Explain your answer if necessary
- Do not guess
- It is perfectly acceptable to say “I don't know” or “I don't remember”
- Only answer questions using facts
- Do not give your opinion or conclusion unless asked to
- If you are asked if you have talked with anyone about the case, answer truthfully
- Wait for “objections” before answering a question
- Do not discuss your testimony
- Try to avoid members of the jury during recesses
